The Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge is a 147,392-acre wildlife sanctuary located west of Boynton Beach. It has some nice wooded trails and a few open areas with seating on a large deck over a wetland as well. It is quite nice, but it is a wildlife refuge though, which is different from a state or county park. They allow restricted hunting by permit, so depending on where you are in the park, you may hear distant gun fire from time to time. It doesn't make sense to me to allow hunting in a wildlife sanctuary, and I was disturbed by the sound when I realized what it was, but it was infrequent and distant enough that I was able to enjoy the experience anyway. However, if you are very sensitive to this, be warned. Please do your research when looking for a place you want to get away to. You want to be sure it will be a positive experience that will allow you to relax and regenerate.
