A hidden gem in our backyard, Fern Forest Nature Center in Coconut Creek is a green oasis in the city. This Broward County Park is a massive 247 acres with a 1/2 mile boardwalk that runs parallel to the old Cypress Creek. There are really neat little caves along the old bank. You can imagine what creatures now make them their home. Many different, and some rare, species of ferns inhabit the trees or grow on the forest floor. This trail/boardwalk is perfect for differently-abled folks who need a stable surface for a wheelchair, or just sure-footing. It's also perfect if you need a quick nature fix in your work clothes on a lunch break. For a possible gopher tortoise sighting, head to the Prairie Overlook. If you don't mind getting a little muddy, explore the Maple Walk. Several times a year, they host moonlit walks in the evenings. I haven't done one yet, but I'll be marking my calendar for the next one.
