Great Blue Herons

With our abundance of waterways in South Florida, the Great Blue Herons are not a terribly rare find. They are really good hunters, and despite their large size, they only weigh 5-6 pounds. They are carnivores, feeding mostly on fish and crustaceans. And though they wade slowly in shallow waters, they can strike down with lightning speed to capture their prey. They have pretty good night vision, so they can hunt day and night. Since they mostly feed on fish, they are highly susceptible to ingesting sick fish that are easy to catch. These majestic birds are a reminder of how beautiful nature is, and how important it is that we do all we can to preserve and conserve our planet.
