White squirrels are beautiful and rare. Did you know that the white squirrel is actually a genetic anomaly due to a mutated gene from the common Eastern Gray Squirrel? It is called leucism, and unlike albinism, it is a reduction in all types of skin pigment, not just melanin. These white squirrels don't have red eyes and also tend to have a gray patch on their heads. I photographed this little guy in Brevard, North Carolina where they have inexplicably taken up residence. It turns out there are several locations throughout North America where populations of white squirrels have congregated. One thing about being white in the trees, is that you're easy to spot. Lucky for me, because I was able to spot this fellow. But, one of the theories is that populations thrive where there are fewer predators. After posting a photo on Facebook, I learned there are communities of white squirrels in Kissimmee, FL and someone said there are some in the northern keys. So, keep an eye out. You never know what you might find while out exploring.
